Cut Single-Use Plastic From Your Life by Buying These Items

If you’re working towards a single-use plastic-free life, you’re going to need some help. Avoiding plastic is hard when everything seems to be packaged in it or contains it – but there are ways around using it. We’re here to help you cut it from your life completely with the help of these useful items.

Weekly Shop Bags

These bags can be put in the trolley while you shop, and colour coded so that your meat, dairy and veg all stay separate. You can also then use the giant bags after the shop to carry your items to the car, then back home. Not only do they help you by making the unpacking process easier, they can be wiped down and used again and again. Shop them here.

Reusable Grocery Bags

For smaller shops, it’s essential to always have small reusable bags on you. Plastic bags are one of the worst kinds of single-use plastic, but using them is by no means necessary. Instead, always carry foldable reusable bags, or linen/cotton totes wherever you go.

Fill Your Own Tea Bags

Did you know, that some tea bags actually contain plastic? They contain polypropylene, a sealing plastic, to keep the tea bags from falling apart. So, even if you put your tea bags in the compost, you could actually be contributing to plastic pollution. To combat this, buy some woven tea bags with a drawstring that you can fill yourself with loose leaf tea. Then pop into a mug, fill with hot water from your Billi tap and enjoy!

Reusable Coffee Cup

We must sound like a broken record banging on about reusable coffee cups. However, it’s vital that you know how bad single-use coffee cups are. Even though many coffee cups claim to be recycling-friendly, they are not. Coffee cups are made of many different types of plastic and cardboard, making them incredibly difficult to split apart and recycle properly.

Bamboo Toothbrush

If you use disposable toothbrushes, you’re not doing anything to help the environment. Try to switch to an electric toothbrush that will last you a long period of time, or even better – switch to bamboo. Bamboo toothbrushes are available in every size and come with natural bristles and a bamboo handle. Perfect for reducing your single-use plastic usage.

Paper Cotton Buds

Plastic cotton buds end up in landfill, and also in our oceans. If you haven’t seen the shocking photo of a seahorse wrapped around a cotton bud, where have you been? See the sad photo below. Instead of contaminating the ocean with the plastic stemmed cotton buds, choose paper ones that will biodegrade.

Natural Detergents and Cleaning Products

Choose natural non-toxic biodegradable alternatives to bleach and cleaning products. Some new products even come in paper bags so you can reduce your effect on the environment. Make sure to choose formulas that are free from synthetic detergents.

Start cutting out single-use plastic from your life by making the easiest changes first. For example, start with cutting out straws, single-use coffee cups and plastic cutlery. Then, make the bigger changes, like changing the containers for your hair and beauty products, choosing produce with not extra plastic wrapping and so on. Even though it may not seem like a lot, these changes can really make a difference, and we’re begging you to start making these changes now before it’s too late.
