Have You Heard of Nitro Coffee?
Nitro Coffee is a New Trend You Might Not Have Heard Of
You might think that coffee is simple. White, black, sweetener or sugar. But, we all know it’s not. After all of the non-dairy options, the half shot, double shot, ‘dirty’, ‘clean’ chai, cortado stuff, there’s now a new addition. The nitro coffee.
Now, if you haven’t heard of it, we’re not surprised. There’s always new coffee news to keep up with. The nitro coffee is fairly new on the scene, so we thought we’d tell you a little about it so you can impress your colleagues. You might think that nitrogen has nothing to do with coffee. You may even be a little surprised that science is sneaking into the realms of your favourite cold beverage. But, it’s here, and it looks like it’s staying.
So How Is It Made?
Nitro coffee is cold brew coffee with a slightly unconventional twist. The cold brew coffee is infused with nitrogen. That cold brew coffee then becomes ‘nitrogenated’, which according to coffee aficionados gives a regular cup of joe a far creamier texture.
Other drinks you know and love that have gone through the same process, include Guinness. Guinness, as you may or may not know, has to be poured in a certain way to give it a smoother, creamy effect. This is because it is also infused with Nitrogen. The resulting taste and texture when it is poured and stored correctly are silky and smooth.
As opposed to carbon dioxide, which when added to drinks gives a bubbly or fizzy texture, nitrogen smooths, and foams the beverages it is added to. This is because compared to CO2, nitrogen gas does not dissolve as well in liquids, meaning the bubbles are smaller.
Owing to the creamier texture of coffee infused with nitrogen, many are now going without milk when drinking nitro coffee. Instead, they choose to pour the cold brew over ice and let the naturally creamy texture take over. If you have more a sweet tooth, you could still refuse the milk or cream, and choose a shot of syrup instead.
We’d love to know what you think of nitro coffee! Keep an eye out for it in your local coffee shop, and let us know your thoughts.
