Bulletproof Coffee is Taking the Health World by Storm

Haven’t Heard of Bulletproof Coffee Yet? You Best Read This

Coffee is most people’s go-to for energy in the morning. But, it’s just been stepped up a level. The most recent craze? Bulletproof coffee. This coffee substitutes milk for butter and coconut oil. Now, I know what you’re thinking… Butter in coffee sounds awful. And, we have to say we agree, but according to a handful of health fanatics, this coffee is actually very good for you.

When you remove milk from coffee, it becomes paleo friendly. Paleo diets are a huge trend by which the followers of the diet consume foods our ancestors would have eaten. They believe our digestive systems have changed little since Palaeolithic times and therefore certain foods put a strain on our gastrointestinal tract. These include dairy and refined sugar. Both of which are usually found in coffee. The bulletproof coffee is a paleo friendly coffee and it’s fans claim there’s plenty of benefits. These include prolonged energy, feeling full for longer, and sharpened focus.

The caffeine in coffee when combined with the fat in the butter and coconut oil supposedly releases the energising effect into the body over a longer period of time than normal coffee. But, if you’re on a low-fat diet this might not be the coffee for you. It’s also hard to understand how a drink with this much saturated fat in it could be considered healthy. However, experts argue that even saturated fat is good for you in small amounts. Anything in excess can be unhealthy and fat is necessary for energy.

The creator of bulletproof coffee states that all ingredients in the coffee promote fat burning and thus can lead to weight loss. For instance, the MCT (a manufactured oil with rumoured energising and fat-burning properties) found in foods such as coconut oil are saturated fats that have special properties.  These include getting digested easily and quickly converted into energy. MCT’s ability to promote fat loss and inhibit fat storage is why it appeals to those dieting.

If you’re keen to try bulletproof coffee, here’s a recipe.

  • Brew 1 cup of coffee using filtered water with 2 ½ heaped tablespoons of freshly ground coffee beans.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of grass-fed, unsalted butter. (Supposedly more nutritional value)
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil.
  • Mix all the ingredients in a blender for about 20 seconds until it looks like a creamy latte.
  • Drink.
